Write Up:
Winter arrived in the Flathead the evening of Friday, November 28. In a 12 hour period the temperature plummeted 50 degrees to -17 with 18" of snow. The cold temps cause some attrition with the GMS group. Denise Davies, Denise Grabowski, Brian Kennedy and I braved the -12 degree start and spent the first 2 hours trying to generate heat. We found a nice spot in the sun for our first break at the Pike Creek & South Fork of Two Medicine trail junction. We then made our way along the Pike Creek trail to the Elk Calf Mtn. trail junction. This trail can be difficult to follow, especially later in the season. We followed the Elk Calf trail back to the FS road which goes along the base of Flattop to the Snotel site area. From there we made our way cross country back to Marias Pass. We encountered a few tricky creek crossings and had to deal with wet, iced up skis a couple of times along with the requisite blow down. Lots of fresh moose tracks which are becoming more common in this area. Trail breaking the entire day except for the half mile on the FS road. We did warm up thanks to short breaks for hot tea and food and staying in constant motion. It also helps if nothing goes wrong when it is that cold. 4 degrees at the car at the end of the day. At least the sun was shinning and the winds were light. It is great to be back on skis touring around with the GMS'ers.
