On top of Mount Chapman
June 30, 2007

Jim Foster and Rick Hanners climbed Bishops Cap on Saturday, June 23, 2007 from Big Bend. Turned out to be over 4,000 foot of elevation gain from the road to the top. Our climb took us up the boot trail from Big Bend to the Highline Trail, about a mile east on the Highline then straight up one of those couliers to the saddle between Pollock and Bishops Cap. We linked up with the boot trail that runs the ridge and made a quick ascent up Bishops. The wind was howling making it quite chilly but with cool temps and the sun shining it was an absolutely gorgeous climbing day.

Rather than descend the same way, we made our way over to a long snow field, donned crampons and headed down. At the Highline we continued east to one of the couliers that intersects the road and made a rather hair-raising descent to the road. The moat that has formed between the last snowfield and the waterfall was probably 50 feet deep so we moved very gingerly down the snow.
